It integrated the ability to run 32-bit applications similar to Windows NT or Windows 3.1 with Win32s. It no longer ran on a separate DOS product. But Windows 95 was not a pure '32-bit' OS: It was still based around the framework of Windows 3.x, 2.x and 1.x. It still ran on top of DOS, but bundled its own special 'Windows 95' DOS (AKA MS-DOS 7). It could even still make use of DOS drivers. The 95 architecture was continued with Windows 98.

You may also override the install type (no serial needed) by creating a file name MSBATCH.INF with the lines '[Setup]', and then 'ProductType=1', placing that in the Win95 setup folder, and then running setup.
VMWare and VirtualBox can be problematic with Windows 9x. If you use those, you may need to disable various acceleration features first, or consider emulators like x86Box or PCem. Windows 95 has many issues on faster machines or VMs, requiring a number of patches in order to operate.

Windows 95 OSR2 ('B' version) added support for FAT32. It bundles IE 3, Personal Web Server, and MS-DOS '7.1'.
OSR2.1 is identical to OSR 2, but includes a seperate USB update installer, that adds the ability to use USB devices. Installing the downloadable USB update brings any OSR 2 system to the level of 2.1.
The OSR 2.x media was ONLY available from OEMs. It was not sold retail.

Important: Windows 95 CDs are NOT bootable, and require an appropriate Windows 95 Boot Floppy. (A 98FE or 98SE disk will also work fine)
To speed up installation, and to avoid numerous problems, copy the win95 folder to a folder on the hard drive (such as c:win95) and then run setup from there.
Microsoft launched Windows XP 18 years ago today. Despite support ending for it back in 2014, the OS is still to be found on just under 3 percent of the world's PCs, according to NetMarketShare. Many people still look back fondly on it, and for good reason. It was a huge step up from the gray, bland Windows versions that proceeded it.
Although Microsoft does issue the very occasional update for XP, in the main it's now viewed as a relic from days gone by, and lacking many of the modern features we take for granted in Windows 10. But what if Microsoft updated it? To celebrate the operating system's big 18th birthday, we thought it would be fun to repost this story from a couple of months ago.
YouTuber Kamer Kaan Avdan has created concept videos for Windows 7, Windows 11, and iOS 13 and last year he showcased his vision of Windows XP 2018 Edition which gave the aging OS a Fluent Design makeover with transparency effects and curved corners. It also introduced a Start menu that blended XP’s design with that of Windows 10, including live tiles.
We were big fans of Avdan's 2018 re-imaging of XP, but plenty of people felt it looked more like a reskinned version of Windows 10, and it's this criticism which is the driving force behind his latest concept video.

There are silver and olive green themes, dark and really dark modes, dynamic wallpaper -- where the sun sets and rises over the iconic Bliss backdrop -- and also updated Paint and 3D Pinball apps.
